British Barbers Association Blog Series

So for my first instalments of the new BBA blog series, i find myself sat in Belfast international airport with an hour or so to kill, whilst i am waiting for my flight

I have been over here teaching a team of 5 students.

I find it quite fitting to speak about education in the UK, within the mens hairdressing and barbering sector. In my opinion and i know many others, mens education has fallen behind and only recently because of the organisations such as the BBA, the rise of social media and the inclusion of a lot more mens work at trade shows, its now on the rise again. We, as an industry are growing and more and more people are wanting to open their minds to new styles, techniques and ways of working, which is GREAT! I have a slogan which is; ''Knowledge is power, Education is key''

And for me, never has a truer word been spoken.

I saw the phase, knowledge is power, once on the back of a Movember advertising leaflet and it made me think. Our minds are a powerful tool and potential has no limits, so why do so many people reject new notions or techniques. Your only limiting yourself by your own naivety and sometimes ego.As an educator yes i teach, but i am also learning every single day off other educators, my students and even

my clients when i'm working in the salon.

When i was going through my main training i would watch videos every single night until 2 or 3 oclock sometimes as time would run away with me. I studied ladies hair to understand and transmit new techniques into my mens work. Even nowadays 10 years into my career i find myself desperate to learn how a certain stylist has put together an image or particular technique they use. And this is just a journey for me, personally, to become a better artist.

A lot of people in this industry also disregard ladies hairdressing however for myself i found that having a good understanding of this sector has helped me grow as a barber, as i have been able to transmit a lot of this knowledge to help produce better images.

So if i had a bit of advice to anyone and everyone in this industry i would be...

Open you mind and push yourself to understand as many techniques, methods and ideas as possible. Don't limit your mind or potential to improve, and even if you have never use a particular piece of equipment or technique at least understand how and why it works the way it does.

Remember that here at the BBA we run a range of courses nationwide for stylists of all levels so check them out!

Over the coming weeks and months i will be writing instalments regarding; My personal career to date, equipment, my involvement with Scissorhands, The BBA and other companies, photoshoots, how to benefit your business via social media marketing and of course cutting hair.

I will also be running a 'Jacks top tip' section at the bottom of my entry.

If there is anything in particular that you would like me to talk about please feel free to message me direct on facebook or instagram and ill be happy to oblige.

Happy cutting!
